5 Tips to Improve Eye Skin Care

When it comes to the skin around our eyes, many people feel the frustration of dark circles, wrinkles, puffiness or other blemishes that seemingly will not go away. A major reason for this is because the skin near our eyes, and our eyelids themselves, are 8-10 times thinner than the skin on the rest of our face. This means less elasticity, less tolerance for damage, and much faster aging. It is very easy to see this in action – even when someone is not feeling well, you can see it in their eyes due to the thinness of the skin. Add in the repeated movement of our underlying muscles, and you get expression lines that appear as permanent wrinkles.

So, what are some ways to help minimize these lines and improve your eye skin health? Here are five tips you can use at home.

1. Use a specific eye cream, not just regular moisturizer.

Did you know that dark circles under your eyes are actually due to the pooling of blood in those areas? It becomes more pronounced when we are stressed or lacking sleep. The thin skin requires specific eye creams to get the best results, not just normal moisturizers – similar to how you should not use a thick foot cream on your face, either. If you truly want to diminish those swollen, puffy circles, look for an eye cream that is the right consistency and suited to the task.

2. Choose an eye cream suited to your skin type and age.

When choosing an eye cream, you will also need to consider your own individual factors, such as skin type and age. When you are in your 20s and 30s, a suitable cream may deal only with expression lines and hydration; as we age, the right cream will also help with collagen loss and other common age-related issues.  Using the wrong cream for your skin type can actually exacerbate puffiness and blemishes, so take some time to choose carefully.

3. Protect your eyes from blue light (blue light filter in eye cream)

One of the biggest problems our thin skin faces these days is the prevalence of blue light. This wavelength is high-energy and can cause quite a bit of early aging signs around our eyes – especially for people who spend a lot of time on phones or computers throughout the day. To help with this, you should use an eye cream that blocks blue light, such as our City D-tox Eye Contour Gel. Even if you are only in your 20s, it is never too early to start protecting your skin from this invisible aging force.

4. Make sure you stay hydrated.

One of the most effective things you can do for the skin around your eyes is also one of the simplest: drink enough water every day and use a hydrating face mask around your eyes. This helps replenish your cells, promotes new growth, and gives your body the resources it needs to keep from drying out. Drinking water is great for internal hydration and essential for skin health because when the body is dehydrated, it will pull water from the skin, causing it to become thin and unbalanced and slowing down collagen and elastin production. With that said, drinking water is not enough to keep your skin hydrated – so, for the thin skin around your eyes, a proper eye cream daily and a hydrating face mask around the eyes once or twice a week will go a long way in helping the thin skin around your eyes remain hydrated and healthy.

5. Protect your eyes from the sun.

Whether you are going out for a day on the beach or walking through cold, snowy streets on your way to work, the high-intensity energy of the sun can wreak havoc on your facial skin. (In fact, you can even be sunburned in winter since the snow reflects extra UV light back up.) It is important to do everything you can to keep the skin under your eyes in its best shape, so when you are going out in the sun, put your eye cream on first and then apply sunscreen over that. You are never too young to take skin care seriously and starting as soon as possible has an incredible cumulative effect over the years.

These are just a few skin care tips to prevent puffy dark circles beneath your eyes and to help minimize damage to the thin, vulnerable skin in this area. Of course, for more emphatic treatment, you can choose a spa facial as well, which can decrease signs of aging and expression lines.
